Jay Attys began his musical journey in East Orange, New Jersey, where Lauryn Hill and Whitney Houston also got their starts. He earned his B.A in Music at Duke University, then went on to complete his M.M. in Jazz Studies with focus in Vocal Jazz Performance at North Carolina Central University. At NCCU, Jay was a member of the award-winning Vocal Jazz ensemble. His studies and performances have taken him across the globe, and have put him in the company of performers such as Branford and Delfeyo Marsalis, Bobby McFerrin, Leslie Odum Jr., and Nate Smith. Jay's style can be described as a fusion of classical, jazz, soul, RnB, and gospel genres.

Jay has a deep passion for the convergence of theory and performance, because he believes that understanding the theoretical reasons behind musical decisions opens up vast realms of experimentation and creativity. Consequently, Jay's teaching style revolves around the marriage of music theory and performance, so that his students can learn how to build on the foundation that has been laid by the musicians who have come before us.

Jay believes that it is the educator's duty to tailor his or her teaching to the unique learning style and needs of each student. As a music teacher, Jay has the ability to help his students succeed not only in the mastery of their chosen instrument, but in all academic disciplines. As long as the student is willing to learn, there is no obstacle that can't be overcome!
